Why Selby

Why Selby colonies pollinate harder

Because Selby also produces queens and honey, our bees are bred and managed for strength, mite-load management, and seasonal readiness โ€” exactly what almond growers need. Three integrated systems, one connected operation.

What does "confirmed" mean?
It's not a marketing promise โ€” every queen we raise moves into protocol, and every order ships with QR traceability so you can see exactly how your bees were produced.
What does placement and pull look like?
We handle logistics professionally โ€” hives are loaded, transported, and placed on an agreed schedule with defined drop and pull windows by region. After bloom, colonies are pulled cleanly on the agreed timing. We communicate throughout the process so there are no surprises.

The Selby Difference

You can verify what you're paying for.

Selby publishes the Selby Queening Protocol (SQP) โ€” our standard for breeder selection, queen production, and batch-level quality control. Every order ships with QR traceability.

The same transparency philosophy applies to pollination stock. Growers can substantiate hive strength and management rather than taking it on faith.

Meet the operators

Selby Apiaries is a multi-generational family operation โ€” not a broker, not a middleman. When you call, you're talking to the people who manage the bees.

Lead beekeeper Tylan Selby (UC Davis graduate) is hands-on across every yard in CA, UT, and WY. He's the field expert who can speak to exactly how your colonies are managed โ€” because he's the one managing them.

The family has been keeping bees since 1974 โ€” over 50 years of building knowledge across seasons, regions, and every challenge the industry has thrown at them.

What Makes the Difference

Three integrated systems, one operation

Most pollination outfits just haul bees. Selby runs queens, pollination, and honey as one connected system โ€” each informs the others. That's why our colonies are stronger.

Queens

Our own genetics program means pollination colonies have better queens โ€” bred for vigor, mite resistance, and seasonal performance.

Pollination

Pollination puts colonies under real agricultural pressure. That experience shapes how we evaluate strength, durability, and readiness.

Honey

Honey production requires healthy, productive colonies. Our pollination bees come from honey-producing, proven foragers.

Common questions from growers

How do you grade your hives?
Every hive meets a six-frame minimum before it leaves the yard. We support independent frame counts on placement so growers can verify what they're getting. No padding, no shortcuts.
What regions do you service for almond pollination?
Our primary pollination operations serve the Central Valley of California โ€” the heart of almond country. We manage hives across CA, UT, and WY, which gives our colonies strong seasonal conditioning before they arrive at your orchard.
When should I lock in hives for 2027?
The earlier the better. Uncontracted hive capacity narrows through fall, and the best placement windows go to growers who commit early. We recommend reaching out now to start the conversation โ€” even if your plans aren't final.
